Custom Taxonomies & Authority Files Sought by Media Companies to Increase Reader Retention/Satisfaction

Nstein Technologies Reveals Top Trends for Media Companies

Montreal, Quebec, December 4, 2008 – A profile of 100 media clients by Nstein Technologies clients revealed that while many use a standard taxonomy by International Press & Telecommunications Council (IPTC), more than 75% of these global media firms are now creating and leveraging their own custom taxonomies and authority files.

A taxonomy is the ordering of content into groups or categories, using both a hierarchy as well as language common to those readers. Several years ago, IPTC, a global consortium of media groups created a “generic” taxonomy that would be common to most news organizations. That standard is what categorizes “Literature” under “Arts & Humanities” and “Computers” under “Science & Technology.”

But generic taxonomies only go so far, said Jean-Francois Martin, Director Linguistic Engineering Services of Nstein Technologies. “For media companies focused on specific niches, custom taxonomies and authority files become the most effective way to increase reader experience, create new products, drive traffic & increase site stickiness,” he said. “Readers have been trained by search engines to jump around to find the content they want. Loyalty to a specific periodical is no longer a given – but a custom taxonomy is a great tool that lets a publisher fight back by creating new ways to keep readers on their sites.”

Network recently underwent a redesign of its entire site, incorporating a custom taxonomy to increase reader satisfaction. “Stuffing” was added to the Taxonomy – and an association was made between “Dressing” with “Stuffing,” so no matter which keyword a reader chose, all relevant recipes would appear.

Martin’s team is seeing more than just custom taxonomies – they are seeing an increasing adoption and expansion of “Authority Files.” (e.g. controlled lists of products, companies, locations, people, etc.). This was helpful for Getty Images, Inc. which built authority files that associated the painter El Greco with his given name Doménicos Theotokópoulos – to the translated name of each of his paintings. El Greco’s “Mater Dolorosa” would be associated to the image named “The Virgin Mary.”

Martin explained that making associations like these are key to creating context and more rewarding searches for readers. “If you are on a site looking let’s say for recipes on Dressings – and came up empty – simply because you didn’t know to type in the word “Stuffing”, you would quickly leave the site. Taxonomies and authority files are a tremendous way to lead people to your content – especially when the words in the taxonomy are not explicitly in the content, which is almost always the case.”

Nstein’s Solutions and its Linguistics Team have helped many of the world’s leading media companies, including: Time Inc., Bonnier Corporation, Proquest, Mywire.com, Scripps Networks, News International and many others create and leverage custom taxonomies and authority files.
