More than 130 attendees convene in Montreal to discuss best practices in a ‘Google®-disrupted’ market
Montreal, Quebec, March 29, 2008 –The impact of the Internet and Google® on traditional media companies was foremost on everyone’s minds at Nstein’s Innovation Leaders Summit held May 14-16. More than 130 C-level executives representing 50 media companies convened in Montreal, Canada to share best practices and learn more about Nstein’s Online Publishing Solutions (www.nstein.com, TSX-V: EIN).
According to survey results, the most pressing issues for today’s publishing executives who are transitioning to digital are managing change, finding new revenue streams, meeting customers needs and expectations and sorting out solutions and managing vast quantities (and types) of assets. One of the challenges noted Michael Moon, President of GISTICS, Corp., is that Google® has disrupted the marketplace changing consumers’ behaviors and advertisers’ expectations. “Readers turn to the search engines to find information, which has forced publishers to think about optimization,” explained Moon.
Mitch Joel, President of Twist Image, reminded attendees that because of search, “any page could be your homepage,” – and as such, site-guided navigation on sub-pages are critical. Sheila Woo, Domain Expert and Senior Linguist and Jean-Francois Martin, Director of Linguistic Engineering Services at Nstein, illustrated how text mining could enhance the reader experience – and literally coax the reader through a site. Chris Daniels, Director of Strategy for Microsoft Corporation, spoke about how publisher could maximize revenue in contextual advertising. Finally, Joseph Bachana, President of DPCI, spoke at length about digital asset management and the leveraging of content. A key takeaway offered by one attendee was that “unused content is a shame, we must unlock the content.”
In addition to the keynotes, there were more than 25 other presentations which included topics such as “Taking Text Mining to the Next Level,” “Making the Case for Multimedia Asset Management,” “Normalizing Editorial & Media Assets,” “Server Architecture and Infrastructure Issues,” as well as four peer-to-peer panel interviews.
Andy Brown, Group IT Director, Independent News & Media gave insights on how his firm automated the process of ingesting more than 50,000 images a day. Chantal Payette, VP Content & Publishing, ImpreMedia LLC, shared how they were able to launch their news portal (www.impre.com) – in just 6 months, further reinforcing ImpreMedia’s position as being the #1 Hispanic news and information company in the US in online and print.
“One of the challenge media companies have had is accepting that information is now bi-directional – created by both professional staff as well as users,” observed Luc Filiatreault, President and CEO of Nstein Technologies. “In creating this summit, we thought how better to reflect this new reality than to have our customers present, sharing their experiences with their peers. Additionally, we knew that the keynotes would be popular,” continued Filiatreault, “but we were shocked that it was standing room only for our presentation on Taxonomy and Text Mining! We learned an important lesson that our own experience and expertise is extremely valuable and that we can’t be shy about sharing our knowledge.”
Recognizing that many of its international customers were not able to journey to North America for the summit, Nstein is planning to do a similar event in Europe sometime in the Fall.
